worldwide, occurring in about 4 out of every 1,000 births and seemingly happening by chance, with no known genetic link. The rest are
fraternal, sharing about 50% of their DNA, like regular siblings.
Mirror Images A rare type, known as “mirror-image” twins (about one-fourth of identical twins), have reversed asymmetrical features.
For example, one twin might be left-handed while the other is right-handed, or they might have birthmarks on opposite sides of their
bodies.
Heredity Factor A woman’s chance of having fraternal twins can be hereditary, especially if her mother or sister has had them. This is
linked to a gene that causes hyperovulation (releasing more than one egg during a cycle), which can be passed down.
Twins May Live Longer Research suggests that twins tend to live longer than the general population, which researchers attribute to the
strong social support and companionship they provide each other throughout their lives.
Different Fingerprints Identical twins share the same DNA, but they do not have identical fingerprints. Fingerprint patterns are
influenced by environmental factors in the womb, such as amniotic fluid pressure and the fetus touching the amniotic sac, resulting in
unique ridges and lines.
